Internet Marketing Myths
Splash investigated and trialled everything, from classified advertising, shopping portals, affiliated programs, pay for click programs, free for all links (FFA) and down-line schemes in our efforts to make the internet our get rich scheme.
We made a few dollars along the way ... but the truth is that none of these schemes worked to achieve our own big money making dreams. Our riches eventually came about through our high search engine ranking and product presence.
These assisted us to attract projects, partners and financing to spearhead several multi million dollar projects. In a traditional marketing sense, the web has been an invaluable and cost-effective tool for Splash.
The Fool and His Internet Marketing Money
As you venture out into cyber marketing land, be aware that there are still a huge number of outright scam artists, and borderline questionable schemes that will be willing to take your money with no results. They say stuff like "You need more traffic - 100,000 Hits to your site each week, Guaranteed ..."
Your business needs visitors and buyers, not hits, which are simply a record of how many times your Website Address has been viewed upon the Internet.
Hits can be very deceiving! For example hits can be generated by "Privately Created Robots" that can visit your website up to 100,000 times a day. Hits can also be generated if a link to your website shows up on another sites web pages. Hits are most commonly generated every time a link to your website shows up in a Search Engine Search on internet browsers ...
Genuine Internet Marketing Concepts
There are some very authentic internet marketing schemes, and you will notice some of these dotted around the Splash Website, like for example the Google Adword Links at the right side of this page. Even though we don't earn millions, we do finance an international holiday trip each year, which is a very fair trade, considering it took me literally 5-10 minutes to throw a link on to our web pages.
Changing Trends
A major part of the internet marketers job is keeping up with the changing trends.
We suggest being aware of the following:
- Those who say they are "Internet Experts" they are not telling the truth! We are ALL novices still! The trick is to be guided by the most experienced novices!
- Get rich fast schemes - don't get drawn into the clever hype, pay out ... then lose out. Make sure the scheme provides proof of their claims, and if you cannot trial a program or service free ... ignore it.
- Ecommerce Sites - they say it is a secure site ... really? (Helloo-oh! believing that anything is secure on the internet is ... a dangerous belief!). I apologize for being an alarmist. It is true that ecommerce programs are becoming much more sophisticated, smarter and more secure, but unfortunately the internet is still the target of internet fraud from hackers, phony emails and shopping portals.
- Use Debit Cards where possible instead of Credit Cards to maintain control of cash flow. I have had to replace my Visa Card twice as a result of petty thievery!
- Do Not SPAM; i.e. send unsolicited email to ANYBODY, get permission first (either verbally or from and opt in website form) and keep that contact date secure and accessible for future reference! Always have a written disclaimer indemnity at the end of your marketing emails to assure the receiver that they have not been SPAMMED. Always include information on how they may "opt out" from future communications. (More about all types of SPAM later in the program).
We will now move to discover some of the upsides and downsides of internet marketing.
